You do not need to have your entire aviation future figured out before you take your first lesson. Start by experiencing a flight, talking through your goals, and finding a training routine you can maintain. At Hangar One Flight Company, we offer one-on-one Part 61 flight training at Hopkinsville–Christian County Airport (KHVC).

Start with a discovery flight

A discovery flight gives you a chance to meet an instructor, see the airplane and experience flying from the front seat. At Hangar One, the published price is $215. You can try the controls under your instructor’s guidance when it is safe to do so.

Treat that first flight as a conversation as well as an experience. Ask what a normal lesson looks like, how scheduling works, and what you should study before the next visit. You do not have to commit to an entire training program to start exploring.

Choose the flying you want to do

A Private Pilot Certificate is a common starting point for someone interested in personal flying. If you want a flying career, that first certificate is a step in a longer training plan. Instrument, Commercial and instructor training involve separate preparation and costs.

Our training-path quiz asks about your experience, goal and availability. It then suggests your next step and displays a planning budget. If you already have flight experience, bring your logbook so we can review the work you have completed.

Ask about paperwork early

The FAA says you can begin flight lessons without first holding a student pilot certificate or a medical certificate. Solo flight is a different milestone with additional requirements. Discuss your certificate and medical path with your instructor before planning that stage.

If you have questions about medical eligibility, speak with an aviation medical examiner. The goal is to identify the right path for your intended flying before you make a large training investment.

Make room for preparation between lessons

Flight training involves more than the time spent in the airplane. Set aside time to review assignments, prepare questions and work through your instructor’s feedback. A calendar with time for study is more useful than one that only lists flight appointments.

At a Part 61 school, your plan can fit around other responsibilities. Tell us which days are realistic, how much you want to budget, and whether your schedule changes from week to week. Weather and aircraft availability also affect scheduling.

Your first visit to Hangar One

We are based at 300 Memorial Field Drive in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Contact us before coming to the airport to arrange a discovery flight or training conversation. Share your experience, your goal and a few times that work for you.

For your first conversation, you do not need a perfect answer to every question. A useful starting point is simple: what interests you about flying, what time you can commit, and what you would like your next year of training to look like.
