A discovery flight is an introductory lesson for someone curious about flying. It gives you a real look at the cockpit, the instructor relationship and the experience of being in the pilot’s seat. You do not need to know aviation terminology before you arrive.
Before you come to the airport
Contact Hangar One to arrange a time at Hopkinsville–Christian County Airport. Our published discovery-flight price is $215. We will confirm the appointment and any preparation details with you.
Tell us if you have a particular reason for wanting to fly, such as personal travel, a future career or simply seeing whether flight training interests you. If you would like someone to accompany you, ask about the arrangement in advance so we can confirm it for the aircraft and flight.
Meet the instructor and explore the airplane
Your instructor will introduce the aircraft and explain what you are about to do. This is a good time to ask basic questions about the controls, the lesson and how you should communicate if you are uncomfortable.
You are learning, not being tested. If an explanation does not make sense yet, ask for a simpler version. The first visit should help you understand the environment you would be training in.
Experience flying with guidance
During the flight, you can have the opportunity to try the controls under your instructor’s guidance when safe. The instructor manages the lesson and helps you understand what you are seeing and doing.
Weather and aircraft availability can affect the appointment. A discovery flight should be planned around suitable conditions, rather than a guarantee that a particular route or view will be available on a specific day.
Questions worth asking afterward
When you are back on the ground, think about whether the experience made you want to learn more. Then ask questions that help you picture a normal training week, rather than only the excitement of the first flight.
- What would the next few lessons focus on?
- How should I prepare between flights?
- Which aircraft would I usually train in?
- How do scheduling and lesson payments work?
- What should I include in my training budget?
You can explore before committing to a full program
The FAA identifies an introductory lesson as a way to begin exploring flight training. Starting lessons and being ready for solo flight are different stages. Your instructor can explain the paperwork and training milestones that apply to your intended path.
If you decide to continue, our three-question training quiz gives you a suggested next step and a planning estimate. If you are still deciding, use the discovery flight to gather information. There is no need to choose every future certificate or rating on your first visit.
